A look behind the scenes of Private Equity

In the investment industry, companies are always searching for qualified people who have excellent expertise in private equity and venture capital. The Certified Private Equity Analyst (CPEA) program is the perfect opportunity for participants to gain these skills and make themselves known in the industry. Philip Schultheiss works as a Senior Associate at AM Ventures Management GmbH and received his CPEA certificate in 2022. In three questions, he explains his motivation and how he benefited from the program.

Which goals did you have in mind when you enrolled for the CPEA certificate program at TUM?

I saw the CPEA program as a chance to strengthen my academic background by learning new methods and concepts utilized in Private Equity and Venture Capital. Besides that, my goal was to meet professionals within the industry to network and exchange know-how. I was also keen on learning more fundamentals about the legal aspects of the business as well as the limited partners’ perspective on investment funds.

How did the part-time program fit into your professional life?

The schedule from Thursday to Saturday with generous lunch and coffee breaks made it easy to network but also to focus on class. I was still able to regularly check in on urgent topics at work. Spread out over multiple months, it was easy to plan ahead and work around the needed time off for the program. Only when the final exam comes closer, you realize how much you have learned over the last half year and that you need to account for an extra weekend to prepare and refresh your memory.

What was the benefit of having both a faculty and a practitioner perspective on the program?

Venture Capital and Private Equity are very secretive industries. It is hard to learn the details and behind-the-scenes mechanics without talking to professionals with a lot of experience. The multifaceted approach of the CPEA program not only delivers the academic analysis of the industry as a whole, but also sheds some light on the intricate details of investment firms through the practitioner’s perspective.
