Class of 2020 Tours the Bay Area and Silicon Valley During International Study Trip

Highly motivated and with an international perspective on business and innovation, our Class of 2020 returned from its study trip to San Francisco and the Bay Area. From 27 August – 5 September, the stacked itinerary included lectures at our partner school, the University of California at Berkeley, as well as visits to incubators and start-ups in Silicon Valley.

The delegation participated in an exclusive five-day conference at UC Berkeley on “Innovation and Business Creation”, following an invitation of Berkeley faculty members and long-time TUM partners Prof. Jerome Engel and David Charron. Highlights included a moonshot story from guest entrepreneur Frank Bunger (Orion Span) and insights from guest speaker Kurt Hawks, who has been driving technology innovation in the Bay Area for over 20 years.

For an unforgettable experience, participants of our Executive MBA in Innovation & Business Creation had a chance to present their team projects in front of a panel of seasoned tech investors, which provided insights into the interplay between start-ups and venture capital, not to forget valuable feedback.

From 4 – 5 September, the delegation completed a company tour around the San Francisco Bay Area, including a visit at UC Berkeley Incubator SkyDeck. Additional stops of the tour included innovative start-ups such as Augmania, Salesforce Ignite and Mesosphere, which counts among its co-founders an alumnus of the TUM. The group also gained insights into the realities of Big Business during their time at Xerox Parc in Palo Alto and Intel.

Quite a lot to take in, quite a lot to digest. This is exactly what the class is doing right now while writing a reflection paper comparing the innovation cultures of Munich and Silicon Valley.
