EMBA Class of 2019 Rates Two-Week Visit to Chinese Partner University as Success

Our Executive MBA Class of 2019 has returned highly motivated from an intense international visit to our partner university Tsinghua University Beijing in China. The comprehensive agenda for the visit in Beijing was created by the TUM School of Management, Tsinghua School of Economics together with the Tsinghua School of Journalism and Communications. On-site support of the delegation was provided by Tsinghua University organizers Kate Zhu and Rose Li as well as Marco Dähn, Program Manager at TUM School of Management.

From 9 – 20 April, 2018, the practice-oriented approach of the program followed the famous Chinese proverb: ‘Tell me, and I will forget. Show me, and I may remember. Involve me, and I will understand.’ Participants were motivated by a mixture of the latest leadership research, glimpses into business practice, and cultural side events. This provided first-hand insights into China’s rich history and rapid economic rise.

During lectures on Tsinghua University Campus the focus was on “Doing Business in China”. Speakers covered areas such as intercultural exchange, the role of Chinese media and the digital transformation of Chinese markets for an up-to-date overview of trending business issues.

Additional highlights included active participation in the conference “Shape the Future: Partnerships between China and EU” in Beijing’s Hadian Business District. During the conference, our participants Thorben Stemme, Broder Heepmann, Dr. Gregor Frey, and Ping Zheng took the stage to present their perspectives on international exchange, cooperation, and business opportunities in front of more than 100 conference participants. The conference was part of the Chinese government’s One Belt One Road initiative, with which the Chinese government aims to establish a trade and logistics network between China, Europe, and other markets.

Overall, our participants appreciated the inter-cultural exchange between partners and the hospitality experienced at the university and businesses. During company visits around Beijing, our group gained valuable insights into business practice at global enterprises and start-up companies. The team at Lenovo presented the latest innovations in computer hardware and virtual reality, Faurecia explained the business opportunities for OEM manufacturing in the automotive industry, while the mobile internet media company Bytedance Inc. showed their user-customized news platforms.

The Beijing International Aeronautical Materials Corp. (BIAM) as well as the Aero Engine Corporation of China demonstrated how to bridge the gap between China and the world market. The itinerary also included a special visit organized by EMBA alumni Qing Zhang to the Tsinghua x-lab, the on-campus platform for research and innovation. Side events organized by our hosts included culinary experiences such as Chinese Hot Pots and a visit to the Great Wall. We would hereby like to thank our hosts and wish our participants a positive and energized learning experience as they engage with their upcoming elective modules.

Looking ahead, we are preparing for the kick-off of our Executive MBA “Class of 2020” with the first on-site module “Strategy & Organization”. This semester, the curriculum will involve a cloud-based business planning game directed by Prof. Dr. Thomas Hutzschenreuter. We highly look forward to our new participants and innovative learning methods.

The final date for the first round of applications is 30 June, 2018, and 15 August for the second round. We ask all applicants to submit their paperwork as soon as possible.
