EMBA Participants Explore Innovation and Risk Management During Elective Modules

As part of the elective module “Business Development & Innovation Management”, our Executive MBA participants tackled important challenges in company founding and market positioning from 29 June – 3 July, 2018. The lecture by Prof. Nicola Breugst on “Entrepreneurial Behavior & Teams” provided important lessons from corporate practice, supplemented by Prof. Joachim Henkel on “Technology Acquisitions” as well as Prof. Oliver Alexy on “Open Innovation”.

During the Business Design Workshop with Nils Jeners and Kai Dierkesmann, participants familiarized themselves with key tools for the definition of successful business models. Additional highlights included a visit to the TUM Chair of Cognitive Systems to see the state of the art in Robotics and hear a lecture by Ulf Steinberg and team on breakthroughs in automated vehicles. Wrapping up a highly engaging workshop, Prof. Hana Milanov used the upcoming company Zipcar for an analysis of entrepreneurial growth.

An additional elective module is concluding as we speak: During the five-day module “Financial and Risk Management” from 27 – 31 July, participants learned about the latest tools for evaluating and managing risks in corporate finance.

TUM experts presented the latest research findings in this field, including Prof. Dr. Gunther Friedl (Value-based Management), Prof. Dr. Jürgen Ernstberger (Financial Accounting & Corporate Governance), and Prof. Dr. Peter Rathnow (Successful Mergers & Acquisitions). Expanding on his lecture on “Capital Markets”, Prof. Dr. Christoph Kaserer invited participants to test their business acumen on international financial markets in a planning game.

Exclusive background information was at the heart of a case study by Prof. Dr. Rudi Zagst: It not only showcased the bankruptcy case of Orange County, California. What’s more, participants had a chance to analyze the business practices of Lehman Brothers in the year 2008 in the context of the unfolding subprime mortgage crisis and the resulting global financial meltdown. During a social event, an engaging Escape Room Game, the group practiced its creative problem solving skills in a team setting.
