Bioprocess Scale-up: From Lab to Production Scale
| Language: | English |
| Location: | Garching near Munich |
| Duration: | 4.5 days in 1 week |
| Start: | 22 February 2027 |
| Cost: | 3,290 EUR |
Participants learn the key principles of scale-up and scale-down, including similarity theory, scaling laws, dimensional analysis, bioreactor design, biocatalysts, CFD, technology transfer, and troubleshooting, while also exploring real industry examples, emerging tools, and new methodologies. The program is especially relevant to professionals working in white biotechnology sectors such as food, cosmetics, and household, while also offering valuable insights for practitioners across other biotechnology domains.
By combining academic expertise, industry perspectives, and real-world examples, the program equips participants with practical tools to improve process performance, reduce costly trial-and-error, and support successful industrial implementation.
This certificate program has been developed in collaboration with EuroTeQ Engineering University and is a part of the Erasmus+ microcredentials initiative focused on Green and Digital skills, co-funded by the European Union.

Program Overview
Here you will find information on the aims of this course and its content.By the end of the program, you will be able to:
- Apply key bioprocess scaling principles, methods, and critical process parameters to enable effective transfer between laboratory and industrial scales in both scale-up and scale-down contexts.
- Evaluate and optimize bioprocess performance across scales by assessing bioreactor designs and operating conditions, predicting the impact of biocatalyst population changes, and integrating sterility, downstream processing, and analytical requirements into scaling decisions.
- Use Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to analyze and optimize mixing, flow behavior, oxygen transfer, and other factors that influence large-scale process performance.
- Troubleshoot bioprocess implementation and technology transfer by identifying common scale-up challenges, diagnosing process issues, implementing effective solutions, and ensuring successful transfer from development to commercial manufacturing.
- Assess real bioprocessing practices and emerging technologies to identify opportunities and future directions for process development and manufacturing decisions.
Here you will find information on dates, requirements and other general conditions for the certificate program.Program:
Bioprocess Scale-up: From Lab to Production Scale
Target group:
Professionals in mid- to lower-management roles who are responsible for overseeing and facilitating the transfer of biotechnology processes from laboratory to industrial scale, and vice versa. Examples of such roles include, but are not limited to, team leads, senior scientists, engineers, and managers. This program is particularly suitable for professionals working in white biotechnology (e.g., food, household, and cosmetics industries), although participation is not limited to this sector.
