Increasing demand for innovation-oriented MBAs

Every year an increasing number of people specialize their business education by attending an MBA, many of them with the goal of founding their own company.

The latest issue of the “Tomorrow’s MBA” report states that the number of MBA applicants which have the intention of leading their own company has skyrocketed in the last couple of years – the study, in which 7000 students from over 90 countries participated, shows growth from 20% of students interested in founding a company last year to 25% in the latest inquiry. German universities have also started adapting to the change in demand for more founding- and innovation-oriented Master’s courses, many technical universites such as the Technical University of Munich (TUM) offer MBAs with an entrepreneurial focus.

TUM School of Management’s Executive MBA in Innovation and Business Creation, offered in cooperation with UnternehmerTUM, can be followed since 2007 and has helped to further research and specialize the German ecosystem by accompanying students from the idea untill actual business creation through UnternehmerTUM’s programs. The course bases itself predominantly on providing students with the required tools in order to successfully manage both a company’s inner workings and walking the path leading towards its inception. Bernhard Kraus, Managing Director at TUM School of Management’s Executive Education Center states: “Founding an own company was not developed enough in Germany at that time (2007). Nevertheless, we saw the need for that kind of MBA”.

Not every university creates a special program for founders, many add elements related to the subject in existing courses in an attempt to create an all-encompassing program for all management needs. The question remains if students are better served with a more general approach or by specializing themselves completely in their desired outcome.
