Interview Claudia Peus: “Digital Leadership – Hype or Hope?”

What actually constitutes successful digital leadership? And how do German companies perform on this topic, which has become significantly more relevant since the Corona pandemic at the latest? Prof. Dr. Claudia Peus, Founding Director of the TUM Institute for LifeLong Learning, answers these and other questions in the latest issue of Ingenics Magazine.

“At the latest since countless organizations had to switch to remote working in the pandemic, it has become clear that hierarchy- and control-based leadership is not reasonable anymore,” says Prof. Dr. Peus. “What’s needed are leaders who encourage initiative, creativity and a willingness to embrace lifelong learning – as well as self-development.” So digital leadership is definitely not hype – but rightfully one of the most discussed topics in recent months.

Digital leadership promotes team members’ own initiative

It should be promoted especially where employees are required to act on their own initiative and develop new ideas, advises the expert: “Leaders must clarify which tools are used in which way, and what is expected: when and for how long employees should be online, how quickly e-mails should be answered, how everyone has their say in digital meetings.” This way, digital leadership can provide the guardrails for successful virtual collaboration.

The need for change in German companies

So what about German companies? “Part of the problem Germany has is that many companies have been very successful for years and still are. Therefore, they don’t see the need to change drastically.” But, it is necessary indeed: companies in Germany need digital leadership to maintain their competitiveness.
