Our Professors Among Best German Business Researchers

After the remarkable results published in the German business magazine WirtschaftsWoche last week, TUM School of Management has again achieved great results, this time in the professors’ ranking. Business informatics specialist Prof. Helmut Krcmar, Founding Dean and Delegate Officer of the President – TUM Campus Heilbronn is listed third in the latest ranking of life’s work conducted by the ETH Zurich and the Düsseldorf Institute for Competition Economics on behalf of WirtschaftsWoche.

Alongside Prof. Krcmar, Prof. Stefan Minner, Prof. Martin Bichler, Prof. Rainer Kolisch, Prof. Holger Patzelt, Prof. Joachim Henkel, Prof. Gudrun Kiesmüller, Prof. Martin Grunow, Prof. David Wozabal, and Prof. Thomas Hutzschenreuter made the life’s work ranking list of the Top 250 business researchers.

For the ranking, the excellence testers, the ETH Zurich and the Düsseldorf Institute for Competition Economics, evaluated all relevant scientific contributions that have appeared in around 860 publications since 2016. The life’s work ranking takes into consideration all scientific publications in the professors’ careers. The number of articles was then weighted to reflect the reputation of the journals.

According to the results, TUM School of Management is the strongest German business school in terms of business research. Among the German-speaking areas, Switzerland’s University of St. Gallen ranked first. The next front-runners are the Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration and the University of Cologne.

Successful Management and Technology Profile

Among the reasons for the TUM School of Management’s excellent success, WirtschaftsWoche points to the close exchange with the industry, the Tenure Track Career System as an incentive for scientific performance, and the future orientation of research foci. Gunther Friedl, Dean of the TUM School of Management, agrees and elaborates: “At the TUM School of Management, part of the business model is, that our scientists change and expand their own perspective. Unlike typical business schools, our faculty has integrated with the engineering and natural sciences. This enables us to cover the entire scientific value chain – from management techniques to technology.”

Business Informatics Specialists Ranked Within Top 20

This interdisciplinary approach is personified by Prof. Dr. Helmut Krcmar and Prof. Dr. Martin Bichler, who were ranked in 9^th and 15^th place respectively. The two business informatics specialists belong to the TUM Department of Informatics and the TUM School of Management.

Three more TUM School of Management researchers were ranked among the Top 100: Prof. Stefan Minner, Chair for Logistics and Supply Chain Management, ranked 17th, Prof. Alexander Hübner, Chair for Supply and Value Chain Management / TUM Campus Straubing for Biotechnology and Sustainability ranked 45th, and Prof. David Wozabal, Center for Energy Markets ranked 90^th.

Additional Ranking of Young Business Researchers

Furthermore, WirtschaftsWoche published an additional list with researchers under the age of 40, with four TUM School of Management researchers represented in the Top 100 under 40:

• Oliver Alexy, from the TUM Entrepreneurship Research Institute in Garching (ranked 19^th)
• Hanna Hottenrott, Chair of Economics of Innovation (ranked 46^th)
• Markus Böhm, Chair for Information Systems and Business Process Management (ranked 68^th)
• Jens Förderer from the Center of Digital Transformation at TUM Campus Heilbronn (ranked 81^st)
