Pirates of TUM take the river Neckar in dragon boat cup

On Saturday, various hopefuls in the 2019 Heilbronn University Cup took to the water. Universities from the region and other competitors pitted their skills against each other in the annual dragon boat races held on the river Neckar. The weather was great and the crowds came out in force to cheer the teams along from the bridges and banks of the river. The rhythm of the drummers, who set the pace for the rowers, made the atmosphere even more thrilling.

This year, for the first time, TUM School of Management was also amongst the competitors. The Pirates of TUM – a team made up of students and staff – competed against other universities from the region in three races. The competition called for strength, stamina and skill.

Dragon boats weigh around 250 kilograms empty and the race was approximately 180 meters long. Teams consisted of 16 rowers, a steersperson and a drummer. The best crews managed the distance in under a minute. Intensive training was necessary before the competition. In the end, all teams reached the finish point thanks to their joint efforts – and had a lot of fun in the process. This video (in German) gives some impressions of the day.

At the end of the competition there was general celebration and cheers for the organizers. The Pirates of TUM are already looking forward with great anticipation to the 2020 dragon boat race.
