Modern methods of artificial intelligence and machine learning applied to problems in industrial manufacturing

The program imparts modern methods of artificial intelligence and machine learning (ML) applied to problems in industrial manufacturing.

  • Databases and data cleansing: Participants learn about various data sources and how to deal with missing, redundant and noisy data.
  • Data transformation: Participants learn about different feature extraction and selection techniques to transform raw data into a meaningful data set.
  • Data mining and modeling: In order to make predictions, participants learn how to apply ML models for regression and classification tasks.
  • Evaluation and interpretation: Using real-world examples from production engineering, participants learn how to interpret the outcome of ML models.

Why this program?

The certificate program “Artificial Intelligence in Production Engineering” addresses a central challenge of production engineering in the age of digitalization and globalization.

In the age of digitalization and globalization, knowing how to interpret large amounts of data has become indispensable in industrial manufacturing and production. Decision makers in all manufacturing industries are increasingly required to know how to read and use big data in production engineering to drive strategic decisions that increase innovation in daily workflows and competitiveness of the company in general.

The right balance:

Our certificate program provides participants with the right balance between theoretical input and a practical applied approach on how to use methods of artificial intelligence and machine learning to enhance daily business and production efficiency.

High practical relevance:

Our expert lecturers emphasize the high practical relevance of the topic with the aim that participants can immediately apply the acquired methods and toolbox to create their own real-world manufacturing data sets.

Cutting-edge expertise:

The certificate program was developed in close collaboration with the Institute for Machine Tools and Industrial Management (iwb) at TUM, one of the largest research institutions for production technology in Germany.

Unique insights:

Our experts from the iwb not only teach in the program but also provide participants with unique insights into what Industry 4.0 can look like. An on-site visit including live demonstrations at the state-of-the-art iwb laboratory at the TUM campus in Garching is also part of the program.

A small group – direct support:

The group will consist of a maximum of 15 participants with two lecturers being present at all times. Therefore, participants will be in close exchange with each other and our experts.

Tailored preparation:

For individual preparation for the certificate course, we offer a voluntary 90-minute online tutorial for self-study to refresh one’s own programming skills.

Content

The program is structured along four topics. In all steps, participants will not only learn the theoretical aspects of the topics, but also their practical implementation using the programming language Python.

  • Introduction
  • Data sources and data bases
  • Data cleansing
  • Introduction to the programming tools, jupyter notebooks and Python
  • Feature extraction and selection techniques
  • Linear regression
  • Overfitting and regularization
  • Logistic regression
  • Neural networks

The data mining and modelling step is the focus of the program. The central foundations of machine learning will be taught and applied to real-world manufacturing data sets.

  • Group work
  • Interpreting outcomes of machine learning models based on real-world production engineering data sets

On the last day of the program, participants get the chance to visit the state-of-the-art laboratory of the iwb at the TUM campus in Garching and see a number of live demonstrations.
