Congratulations to Alexandra Borchardt, Ph.D., for being appointed honorary professor at TUM School of Management. On her official appointment on November 9th, 2020, Gunther Friedl, Dean of the TUM School of Management, emphasized Borchardt’s immense expertise at the interface of science and practice. “Alexandra Borchardt has been an outstanding guest lecturer at the TUM School of Management for several years now. We are honored to have her, the first woman, on the board of honorary professors. Her high international reputation and immense expertise in strategy and leadership are an important asset for our faculty”, says Gunther Friedl.

“I’m honoured, thankful and delighted to join the faculty of TUM School of Management. I have felt very much appreciated and supported by outstanding individuals in all these years and will assume my new role with a pronounced sense of obligation and responsibility. As demands on leadership grow in the fast-changing world of digital transformation, the next generation of leaders deserves all the support they can get: by science and practitioners and in a joint debate on values and strategies.”

Alexandra Borchardt is the first women to join the board of honorary professors. Borchardt is a senior journalist, media consultant and Senior Research Associate at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at the University of Oxford. She co-leads the journalism programme at Berlin University of the Arts, the Digital Journalism Fellowship at Hamburg Media School and supports local and regional newsrooms with digital transformation as a coach for Wan-Ifra’s Table Stakes Europe project. She is a member and rapporteur of the Committee of Freedom of Expression and Digital Technologies and was Vice-Chair of the Committee on Quality Journalism in the Digital Age at the Council of Europe. She used to be managing editor at Süddeutsche Zeitung (SZ), the largest daily newspaper in Germany. Borchardt was also founding editor of Süddeutsche’s ‘Plan W’, an award-winning magazine for women and business. Before joining SZ she worked for Financial Times Deutschland and Deutsche Presse Agentur, the German Press Agency.

Borchardts expertise lies in digital transformation and how it impacts media, democracy, the workplace and human behavior. She teaches “Leadership and Strategy in the 21st Century” at TU Munich and Media Transformation at the University of the Arts in Berlin. Borchardt holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from Tulane University, New Orleans (1994), and in 2013 she completed a Program for Management Development at IESE Business School, Barcelona.

The 560 TUM professors are supported by ca. 220 Honorary Professors. Honorary professors are first-class experts from industry and economy, respected researchers and well-known entrepreneurs. They strengthen the link between academia and practical experience and contribute to the wide range of subjects in our 15 departments.
