Trust, Blockchain, and Smart Contracts – Virtual Workshop at the Chair for Technology and Innovation Management

“Trust, Blockchain, and Smart Contracts” was the topic of an online workshop held last week at TUM School of Management. Organized by Professor Joachim Henkel and Daniel Obermeier from the Dr. Theo Schöller endowed Chair for Technology and Innovation Management, the event brought together 27 scholars from internationally renowned universities.

Nine presentations, followed by lively discussions, covered highly topical questions such as: How should we govern blockchains? What is the impact of introducing national cryptocurrencies? Can smart contracts remove the necessity of trust? And, what is the potential of smart contracts combined with IoT sensors?

“A big thank you to all presenters, who delivered excellent presentations and contributed to vivid discussions, and in particular to Christian Catalini”, says Prof. Henkel. In his keynote the MIT professor, co-creator of Libra and Head Economist of Calibra, shared his insights into the economics of Libra and sketched its further development.

Participants’ feedback was very positive, and most likely a follow-up workshop will be held next year. One of the key takeaways was that an online workshop, if well-organized, has its advantages compared to on-site events: “It fits more seamlessly into tightly packed schedules while keeping our carbon dioxide footprint low”, concludes Prof. Joachim Henkel.
