20 Researchers – 24 Hours – from Research Idea to Research Proposal

Kickoff for the second Researchathon at TUM Campus Heilbronn on March 13th, 2020

Update: Due to the spread of the Corona virus and increased health warnings and travel restrictions TUM School of Management has decided to postpone the Researchathon 2020 as a precautionary measure.

Next Friday, March 13, 2020 will be the kickoff for the second Researchathon with the theme “Learning Leadership in the Digital Age” at TUM Campus Heilbronn. The Researchathon – akin to a Hackathon – brings together researchers from different (sub-)disciplines of leadership research for a two day, around-the-clock event to kick-start new research projects on people leadership in the digital age. “The Researchathon follows a simple formula: 20 researchers in 24 hours, from research idea to research proposal”, describes Dr. Ellen Schmid, co-organizer of the first Researchathon. Prof. Dr. Claudia Peus further explains: “The basic idea was to apply the concept of rapid prototyping to research. The group would come up with a short proposal, then receive feedback from an internationally leading group of leadership fellows, and then adapt the proposal and do that time and again within 24 hours”. Hereafter, researchers pitch the final versions of their research projects. The mentors then award 1,000 € to the winners.

Dr. Ulf Steinberg who was part of last year’s winning team remembers: “What I was really surprised about was how quickly it all went down. 24 hours seems like a long time, but, once you get into the flow of actually doing research with an enthusiastic group of other researchers, you don’t notice the time passing. In the end, I was really honored that my team and I won this competition with our proposal, because we definitely also saw a lot of other strong proposals”.

Surely, an ideal environment for the researchers to focus, with a clear structure and regular feedback will again help accelerate an inspiring research process and result in strong projects at this year’s Researchathon!

This year, we are pleased to have Prof. Dr. Claudia Peus (TUM School of Management), Prof. Dr. Ilke Inceoglu (Exeter University), Prof. Dr. Deanne den Hartog (University of Amsterdam) and Dr. Matthias Reuter, Global Head of Siemens Leadership Excellence, join us as mentors.
