TUM Receives Genius Loci Award for Excellence in Teaching

This year, the Technical University of Munich (TUM) is the only university to receive the Genius Loci Award for excellence in teaching. The award recognizes the consistent integration and implementation of the teaching constitution within the university’s overall strategy. For the fourth time, the award, which is endowed with 20,000 euros, was offered by the Stifterverband and the Volkswagen Foundation this November.

In particular, TUM was able to convince the jury with a well-structured teaching concept and concrete corresponding measures. Innovative teaching at TUM is made available to all students onsite and online.

“TUM has, in an exemplary manner, succeeded in seamlessly coordinating and interweaving an extremely varied package of measures, resulting in a well-rounded, coherent overall concept,” says Volker Meyer-Guckel, Deputy Secretary General of the Stifterverband.

In parallel with the adoption of its teaching constitution, TUM has also established corresponding committees, such as the Parliament and the Board for Teaching. To promote innovative teaching projects, TUM has set up a teaching fund as well as extended quality circles made up of students, lecturers, alumni and representatives from society and business, who are involved in the continuous development of study courses.

SVP Müller: “Proof that excellent teaching and research go hand-in-hand”

TUM has been focusing on excellence in teaching for years and can therefore serve as a model of how universities can achieve excellence, both in research and teaching, the jury concluded.

“The development of competencies among our students, who entrust themselves to us in a decisive phase of their lives, and the structuring of state-of-the-art knowledge for teaching, require clear strategies and concepts. Committed lecturers who provide impulses play a central role in this. They are proof that excellent teaching and research go hand in hand. We are delighted about this great recognition and see it as a wonderful incentive to continuously develop our teaching strategy,” says Prof. Gerhard-Müller, Senior Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs at TUM.
