The “Commission on the Future of Agriculture” unanimously adopted its final report ” The future of Agriculture. A common agenda” on June 29, 2021. The report was officially handed over to German Chancellor Angela Merkel on July 6, 2021 via a video conference. The commission consists of 31 scientific members, including TUM professor Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Vera Bitsch, and reflects the spectrum of all social groups relevant to agricultural policy, with the involvement of the scientific community. It was a successful experiment and demonstrates the value of such dialogs with the participation of comprehensive stakeholder. “Such dialog processes can make an important contribution to understanding a common path for implementing more sustainability at all political levels, from the Bundestag to local conflicts, e.g. barn construction or changes to the landscape caused by greenhouses or hail nets,” says Prof. Vera Bitsch.

The “Commission on the Future of Agriculture” was set up by the German government on July 8, 2020 in response to the farmers’ protests. Its mandate is to develop recommendations and proposals to enable sustainable, i.e. ecologically and economically viable and socially acceptable, agriculture in Germany in the future. We congratulate the commission on its report!
